My stepmom might have colon cancer, what usually happens after the diagnosis?

Posted on June 15th, 2009

She went for a colonoscopy, the doctor couldn't perform it because he said there was a huge tumor in her colon. He took a biopsy and made her an appointment for a CT scan to see how far up it has spread. He said even if it isn't caner that they will have to remove the tumor. What does all this mean. I guess it is really bad either way. Major surgery plus the possibly of chemo? Anyone know someone that went through this, what happens next usually?

Treatment and prognosis depends on the stage of the cancer and you will not know that until after surgery. Without even knowing what her symptoms were, how long she had them, the physical exam finds and the location of the tumor it’s impossible to even guess, as there is no “usual” for these situations. It can range anywhere from no treatment beyond surgery to it being life threading. I hope it goes well.

What is the role of Medical Radiations in diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer?

Posted on June 14th, 2009

I'm not doctor, but if you mean the x-rays and other methods used to detect masses of tissue, it's to find the masses of tissue in the body and to see if it has spread anywhere else. Of course it's not 100%, but medical has become much more effective at finding malignant masses of tissue.

And as for treatment, breast cancer cells as well as other cancer cells are usually weaker then surrounding good tissue to certain treatments. Unfortunately many of those treatments, imparticularly the radioactive ones have systemic (meaning they affect the entire body) side effects. Which is why people lose their hair and have other health related side effects. However with breast cancer imparticularly, there is much research and discoverys that have been made. Many new treatments come out regularly concerning breast cancer. Usually doctors like to use the ones with the least side effects first and if they don't work, doctors tend to move on to the more powerful drugs.
But since everyone's body is different, the cancer cells will react differently for everyone, so finding the right treatment can be hard. I'd recomend you ask your doctor any question you have, buy recently published books on the subject as they would have the most up to date medical information, and don't be afraid to get second and third opinions. My aunt passed away from breast cancer, the important thing is start treatment early and as for nutrition, different doctors have different opinions because providing good nutrition for your good cells also provides good nutrition for your cancer cells. So learn all you can about it, it's a battle, my aunt fought this battle. Unfortunately for me, God called her to come home. But now she is at peace up there, as for me, I'll see her one day again.

Can I get health insurance after cancer diagnosis?

Posted on June 13th, 2009

Generally, no, not after diagnosis. The individual plans will not accept you unless you've been cancer free and off of any medications for a certain period of time. The only option would be a group plan through an employer. Then you'd have a waiting period for pre-existing conditions but then you'd be covered.

You may want to check out your state Medicaid to see if you'd qualify. Some states have medically needy plans so even if you don't qualify by income you might qualify if the treatment for your type of cancer is expensive (and most are).
